Nigerian consulates in the United States

Nigeria runs consular services in the United States from three offices: the Embassy in Washington, D.C. and the consulates general in New York and Atlanta. New York holds the biggest district, twenty states reaching as far west as North Dakota; Atlanta takes sixteen southern states plus Puerto Rico.

The first thing to get right is the map itself: nobody publishes the Embassy’s own district. Fifteen states and territories, California, Maryland and Virginia among them, appear in no official list. The Embassy is the office that answers in practice, and every page here for those states says which part is published and which is deduction.

What saves the longest journeys is knowing which paperwork never sees a consulate. No office in this country issues a NIN, the NIMC does, and without a NIN there is no passport. The visa left the consulates entirely and runs through an outside centre in Houston. And a passport application fails most often over a small thing: your names must appear in the same order on the form, the birth certificate and the NIN.

Houston deserves its own warning. It is the most searched city with no Nigerian office, and several private companies there advertise passport and visa services. None of them is a consulate: the Houston page says who actually covers Texas.

Before you drive anywhere, check the days. Atlanta attends the public on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, the Embassy gives no consular service on Fridays, and New York’s counter opens three hours a day. The appointment guide walks through all three systems.
