Consulate General of Nigeria in Atlanta

Consulate General of Nigeria in Atlanta

Atlanta handles consular business on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays only. Its own website publishes three different opening hours on the same page, so the consular days are the figure worth planning around.

Check the street number too: the consulate is at 8060 Roswell Road, and Google lists a private Nigerian Passport Service at 8046 Roswell Road, on the same stretch of the same road, plus a Nigerian Passport and Visa Hub on Hammond Drive.

Neither is a consulate, and both charge for steps the official process lets you do yourself.

The Consulate General in Atlanta works from Roswell Road, in the Sandy Springs stretch north of the city.

It covers sixteen states plus Puerto Rico, a list its consul general's page spells out in full, the whole South from Texas across to the Carolinas, and it is the busiest Nigerian office in the country by search volume: more people look for this consulate than for any other Nigerian address in America.

Consular business happens on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, public holidays aside. The website publishes three different sets of opening hours across the same page, so the consular days are the figure to plan around. Turning up on a Wednesday means the door is open and the counter is not.

What the Atlanta office handles

The counter handles documents that carry a signature and a seal.

  • Passports, issued against a completed online application, a payment slip and a NIN that matches your birth certificate
  • Emergency Travel Certificates, for a lost, stolen or expired passport, handled by mail rather than at the window
  • Attestations and consular letters, including age declarations and authorisations for children travelling alone
  • Burial transit permits, for repatriating remains to Nigeria
  • Consular registration, so the office can reach you in an emergency

Visas are the exception: every applicant goes through an external visa application centre, not through a consulate. That centre is in Houston and it is run by a private contractor.

One oddity worth knowing if you go looking for the official list. Atlanta publishes a page of Nigerian diplomatic missions in the United States, and that list does not include Atlanta.

It names the Embassy in Washington, the Consulate General in New York and the Permanent Mission to the United Nations, and stops there. Anyone using it to find their nearest office would conclude the South has none.

What you can settle without coming in

Sort out what needs a counter from what needs a browser before you book anything.

Atlanta is the only one of the three that publishes a full service catalogue, with requirements and fees for each document. Most of what this site can tell you about Nigerian paperwork in America comes from here, and the other two offices publish nothing comparable.

nigerianconsulates.us is an independent guide to Nigeria’s consular offices in the United States. We are not the Nigerian Embassy, any Consulate General, or any government body.

We do not book appointments and we do not sell them. Details are checked regularly and can change without notice: confirm with the office before you travel.
