Consulate General of Nigeria in New York
This consulate shares 828 Second Avenue with the Permanent Mission of Nigeria to the United Nations, which shows up in Google under the same search and does not handle passports or visas. The consular counter is open three hours a day, from ten to one.
The Consulate General occupies Nigeria House at 828 Second Avenue, in Turtle Bay, a few blocks from the United Nations. It covers twenty states, from Maine down to Delaware and west as far as North Dakota, which makes it the largest Nigerian consular district in the country by number of states.

Two things about this address catch people out. The consular counter opens three hours a day, ten to one, so an afternoon arrival is a wasted trip.
And the same building houses the Permanent Mission of Nigeria to the United Nations, a separate body that does no passport or visa work and that Google returns under the same search.
What the New York office handles
What follows is what happens at this counter. Everything else on this site starts somewhere other than here.
- Passports, issued against a completed online application, a payment slip and a NIN that matches your birth certificate
- Emergency Travel Certificates, for a lost, stolen or expired passport, handled by mail rather than at the window
- Attestations and consular letters, including age declarations and authorisations for children travelling alone
- Burial transit permits, for repatriating remains to Nigeria
- Consular registration, so the office can reach you in an emergency
Visas are the exception: every applicant goes through an external visa application centre, not through a consulate. That centre is in Houston and it is run by a private contractor.
This office does appear on the official list of missions that the Atlanta consulate publishes, alongside the Embassy and the UN mission. Atlanta itself does not. If you have seen that list and concluded there are only two consular offices plus a UN mission, that is why.
What you can settle without coming in
None of the following requires a visit here.
- The passport form is completed and paid for online before the appointment exists
- Visa applications start online and finish at a visa centre, not at this address
- Police clearance is a Nigeria Police Force document and no consulate can print it
- A birth certificate is issued in Nigeria, and the names on it govern the passport
New York publishes its jurisdiction on its own site and on a second official domain, and the lists match state for state, which is more than can be said for most consular networks.
Illinois, Michigan and Minnesota are on it, so a Nigerian in Chicago or Detroit belongs to New York rather than to anything closer.
nigerianconsulates.us is an independent guide to Nigeria’s consular offices in the United States. We are not the Nigerian Embassy, any Consulate General, or any government body.
We do not book appointments and we do not sell them. Details are checked regularly and can change without notice: confirm with the office before you travel.
