Nigerian visas: the consulate is not where you apply
If you are looking for the Nigerian consulate to lodge a visa application, you are looking in the wrong place. Nigeria moved visa intake out of its consulates: every applicant goes through an external visa application centre, and in the United States that centre is a private contractor in Houston.
The consulate in Atlanta says so plainly on its own visa page. All applicants are required to visit the Visa Application Centre, and appointments there are mandatory for every visit.
Three groups are exempt from turning up in person: children under five, adults over sixty-five, and anyone whose biometrics were captured for a Nigerian visa in the past six years. They can send the application in by post.Where the centre is
And here the official source contradicts itself. The Atlanta consulate names two different operators on two of its own pages, so both are listed here rather than picking one in silence.

| Operator | Address | Named on | Hours |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thebez Global Resources Limited | 2425 W Loop S, Suite 340, Houston, TX 77027 | the consulate's visa centre page | Submissions 9:00 to 13:00; passport collection 15:00 to 16:00, Monday to Friday |
| OIS | Suite 745, 9894 Bissonnet Street, Houston, TX 77036 | the consulate's visa services page, which also names an Atlanta office | Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 16:00 |
Call before you travel. Neither page acknowledges the other, and Houston is a long way to go for a closed door.
Applications with supporting documents can be mailed to the centre rather than delivered by hand, which matters given that one office covers the whole country.
Which visa class you need
Nigeria codes its visas by purpose, and picking the wrong class is a rejection rather than a correction. Short visit visas cover stays of up to ninety days, single or multiple entry.
The e-visa, and who it is for
Nigeria's online visa route is what most searches mean by "Nigeria e visa", and it is the busiest single visa term in this vertical. It runs through the Immigration Service portal rather than through any consulate or centre.
A Nigerian citizen does not need any of this. If you hold a Nigerian passport you travel on it, and what you may need instead is a renewal or, in a hurry, an Emergency Travel Certificate.
- Businesses in Houston and Atlanta advertising “Nigerian passport and visa services”. None of them is a consulate
- Fee quotes that bundle an agency charge into the official one
- Any site promising a visa without biometrics if you are not in one of the three exempt groups
The consulates themselves publish no visa fee table, so the amount comes from the portal or the centre at the time you apply.
Why the consulate stopped taking applications
Nigeria moved visa intake to external centres to separate document handling from adjudication. The centre collects the file and captures biometrics; the decision stays with the immigration authorities. From the applicant's side the visible change is that the address you go to is not a Nigerian government building.
The practical consequence is that calling a consulate about a visa application rarely helps. The people who can see the file are at the centre or at the portal, and the consular switchboard has no view of either.
Nigerians do not need any of this
A large share of the searches that land on visa pages come from Nigerian citizens who assume they need one. They do not. A Nigerian citizen enters Nigeria on a Nigerian passport, and where that passport has expired the question is a renewal or an emergency document rather than a visa.
The same applies to Nigerian-born dual nationals. The dual citizenship page covers what to carry, and the short version is both passports.
What delays an application
Three things account for most of it. A visa class chosen for convenience rather than for the actual purpose of travel gets refused rather than reclassified.
Documents in another language arrive without the certified translation the consulate insists on. And applicants who are not United States citizens send in a passport with no green card or residence stamp, which the requirements ask for explicitly.
None of those is recoverable by explanation after the fact, which is why the requirements are worth reading twice before the appointment.
