Nigerian Embassy in Washington, D.C.
The Embassy is open Monday to Friday, and consular services stop on Fridays. It also covers the fifteen states and territories that no published Nigerian source assigns to any office, California and Maryland among them.
Google also returns a second Embassy of Nigeria at 2201 M Street NW, with a phone number of its own. The Embassy’s own website gives a single address, 3519 International Court NW, and that is where consular business happens. Call before travelling to any other address.
The Embassy of Nigeria sits on International Court, in the cluster of diplomatic missions off Van Ness in north-west Washington.
It is the senior Nigerian mission in the country and the one that answers when no consulate covers your state, which is the situation for fifteen states and territories, California and Maryland among them.
Contacting the Washington, D.C. office
Not published by Nigeria: these are the territories left once New York and Atlanta list theirs.

The building is open weekdays from ten to four, but consular services stop on Fridays. That is the Embassy's own wording, and it turns a five-day week into four. If you are driving in from Baltimore or flying from the west coast, that single line is worth more than the opening hours.
What the Washington, D.C. office handles
This office does the work that needs a Nigerian official in front of you, and only that work.
- Passports, issued against a completed online application, a payment slip and a NIN that matches your birth certificate
- Emergency Travel Certificates, for a lost, stolen or expired passport, handled by mail rather than at the window
- Attestations and consular letters, including age declarations and authorisations for children travelling alone
- Burial transit permits, for repatriating remains to Nigeria
- Consular registration, so the office can reach you in an emergency
Visas are the exception: every applicant goes through an external visa application centre, not through a consulate. That centre is in Houston and it is run by a private contractor.
What you can settle without coming in
Half of what brings people to this address never needed the trip.
- Your NIN comes from the NIMC and holds up everything else until you have it
- The passport form is completed and paid for online before the appointment exists
- Visa applications start online and finish at a visa centre, not at this address
- Police clearance is a Nigeria Police Force document and no consulate can print it
Washington also handles the states nobody publishes a district for.
Nigeria lists the jurisdictions of New York and Atlanta and says nothing about the rest, so the Embassy is the answer by elimination rather than by any official table.
Call before you travel, because that is a distinction the phone can settle and this page cannot.
nigerianconsulates.us is an independent guide to Nigeria’s consular offices in the United States. We are not the Nigerian Embassy, any Consulate General, or any government body.
We do not book appointments and we do not sell them. Details are checked regularly and can change without notice: confirm with the office before you travel.
